How to choose a lash map for your eye shape
Cat eye, doll eye or open eye? Here is how lash mapping works and why your eye shape decides the look.
A lash map is the plan your artist draws before a single extension goes on. It decides which lengths go where across your lash line. Two people can get the same number of lashes and walk out looking completely different, and the map is the reason.
The three maps people ask for most
Cat eye. Lengths build from short at the inner corner to longest at the outer corner. It lifts and stretches the eye outward. It is popular because it photographs well and looks sultry without being heavy.
Doll eye. The longest lashes sit in the center, right above the pupil. It makes eyes look rounder and more awake. It can be very pretty on almond eyes, but it can overwhelm eyes that are already round.
Open eye. A softer mix of the two, with the longest lengths placed just past the center. It is a safe, flattering middle ground for a lot of eye shapes.
Matching the map to your eyes
Hooded eyes usually need a map that lifts upward and outward so the lashes are not hidden by the lid. Downturned eyes often do well with a cat eye that pulls the outer corner up. Monolids can look amazing with a curl that is chosen carefully so the lashes show instead of pointing into the lid. Close set eyes look more balanced when the longer lengths move toward the outer corners.
This is why a good artist looks at you with your eyes open first. Your natural lashes, your brow shape and how your lid folds all change what will look right.
